Realtor® Code of Ethics

HISTORY OF THE REALTOR® CODE OF ETHICS

The National Association of REALTORS® was formed in 1908.  At that time there were no license laws and the real estate industry had a history of speculation, exploitation, and disorder. In 1913, the National Association of REALTORS® established a professional standard of conduct.  This standard of conduct became the basis for many state licensing laws.

The REALTOR® Code of Ethics continues to be the foundation of every REALTORS® business practice.  All REALTORS® regardless of their specialty in the real estate business are bound by the duties in the REALTORS®' Code of Ethics.  The National Association of REALTORS®  Professional Standards Committee reviews the Code of Ethics each year to ensure the code is current with business practices.
